My father and mother divorced back in the 1980s. My father was ordered to pay child support. The only time my mother received any money was when the Oklahoma State Tax Commission intercepted his taxes one year. He passed away owing a tremendous amount of money in back child support on 4 children. Is there any way to find out if he had some sort of estate or if he had a life insurance policy?

I would consult a lawyer. If you cant afford one, go to the Legal Aid Society.
Your mother would need to consult with an attorney and it is better to do as soon as possible.
If this involves more than one state it may be more difficult but not impossible.
You probably cannot touch any insurance as insurance proceeds are not usually considered part of an estate and paid to a designated beneficiary.
There may be other assets that an attorney could place a hold on until a final decision was made as to whether she has a legal claim.
Especially real estate of any kind, money in the bank or even vehicles.
You can find out if a will has been placed for probate by checking records at his county court house. Usually a records clerk will show you where to look.
If your mother needs assistance she can check with her local family services or legal aid society.
