I'm looking for a copycat recipe for the discontinued generic Grill Mates steak rub. I used to always put it in burgers and it's one of the few that salt isn't the first ingredient. The label ingredients if it helps are: Garlic, spices and herbs (including black pepper), salt, brown sugar, onion, paprika, silicon dioxide (added to make free flowing), sunflower oil, and spice extracts.

You can get this one. www.culinaryhill.com/
Thanks! Just to clarify for everybody though Im looking for the generic steak rub. Not Montreal steak rub, there are a lot of recipes out there for that one.
There are very few copycat recipes for any of McCormick's discontinued products.
Usually you will have to use another recipe that has much the same ingredients and test it out until it meets your taste.
Information: Montreal products are made by McCormick.
Here is a good substitute (and with any recipe how much salt or any other ingredient is your decision).
There are some very good recipes online, mostly the difference is just 1 or 2 ingredients so maybe you can find something close to what you want.

This just happens to be on sale but probably not for very long.

You may or may not know this, but people sell them on eBay (for big bucks):

There is a mix in this link, but some are the plain one.
I have bought things like this before and been pleased. You just have to check the seller out carefully for good feedbacks and verify the dates.
Its been a while, but I have had good experiences getting discontinued items this way. Then I ration them out so they last :)
Hope this helps!!
P.S. In my next life I think I want to be chemist to help make mixes for everything like this that gets discontinued. I have a friend who was a chemist and who tried doing this with salad dressings. He made some great stuff, but never 100% to the originals. I swear they use some secret items not on the ingredients list :(
