We have a old toilet and sometimes the handle gets stuck. I was wondering what this is costing us in water if it ran for 24 hours?

Yes, it will cost you. Go to the hardware store and purchase a new apparatus. Not expensive. You also might take of the toilet tank lid and see if you can adjust the chain that's on the arm that lifts the stopper. Really, the parts are cheaper than paying for unused water. It may be the bottom flapper that needs to be replaced. Rubber does deteriorate when it gets old.
My water bill was $500 for the month. I wasn't at home for a few days and didn't know the flap was out of alignment. Fix this problem immediately if not sooner!
It is running A LOT of water through there! Go ASAP and replace or repair the handle! Most of the time it is the little chain that needs to be loosened or the ball cock is damaged or worn out and needs replaced. You should be able to turn the water off by the water shut off valve near where the water enters the toilet tank. Turn this off and turn it on, allow the tank to fill and then flush each time you need to until this repair is done.
