I have a 4 year old Craftsman riding mower 21 hp, with a Briggs & Stratton engine. The motor is hard to turn with the starter. It has a new starter and battery. It makes a 3/4 turn and it makes 1 to 2 turns and starts right up. When the starter can not turn, it heats up. Without a spark plug the engine moves OK. I checked the valve clearance - .004 & .006. Do you think it is a compression release valve? How can I be sure of that?
Please help. What other things could it be?

Sears has a troubleshooting guide here www.searspartsdirect.com/
You may want to contact their customer services and ask www.craftsman.com/
When you talk to them, be sure to ask if the mowers are under the umbrella of life time warranties (although with them filing bankruptcy, I have no clue what that does to the warranty program.)
If the warranty program will continue on, this is important to know BEFORE you mess with it, as if you messed with something and it has the life time warranty, you may invalidate it. I have used the service before on tools and it has saved me money!
Better safe than sorry and ask the experts before proceeding!
Good luck!
