I remember making this 40+ years ago. You can place sliced fruit in among the jello layers. Just dont use pineapple - the jello wont set properly. To make it part of a summer dinner, use shredded raw veggies instead of fruit.
Canned pineapple will work. It's just the fresh pineapple that has enzymes that prevent the gelatin from setting up.
