The completed basket.Made with a CD base, this was a fun little basket to make. I filled it with a small tube of lotion and some treats for a friend's birthday gift.

There are a lot of different tutorials on youtube but you can make up your own pattern to get different looks as long as you follow the basics from this project.

Total Time: 1 1/2 hours

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Make a slip stitch with crochet hook and yarn. Lay the CD onto a flat surface. Using your left hand, with the yarn behind the CD and your right hand holding the crochet hook, pull the loop of the ball of yarn through the hole in the middle of the cd, pulling it up to the crochet hook level. Insert the loop onto the crochet hook. Wrap yarn around the crochet hook and pull through the loop, keeping it slightly tight and secure. Continue with this step until you have gone all the way around the CD and covered the base.
  2. Starting yarn on a crochet hook.

  3. For the first row, slip stitch at the end of the loops to connect. Chain two. Half double crochet into each hole all the way around. Slip stitch at the end of the row. Chain 2. Here you can do any kind of crochet stitches depending on if you want a tight weave or a loose weave. You can use single, half, or double crochet stitches. I used half double crochet for most of my stitches.
  4. Crocheting the basket from the CD base.

  5. Crochet two or three rows of stitches in the manner described above. This makes a stable "wall" around the cd. At this point, you could start using double crochet stitches and crochet two or three double crochet stitches in one hole, skip one and continue all the way around the basket to get a "flowery" look. Do as many rows as desired.

  7. To finish off, cut the yarn and weave it into the top of your last row of stitches to hide it. Cut a piece of ribbon and weave in and out of the stitches for a fun look or you could crochet a handle with chain stitches and attach to both sides of the basket. I wanted an open basket look, so I added the ribbon. The link shows how to make a handle.
