Supplies:

Steps:

  1. To crochet the bow portion of the bow tie, chain 22. For the first row, crochet half double crochet in second chain from hook all the way across to the end. Turn. Chain two. For the second row, continue to half double crochet until you have completed six rows. On the last chain, cut the yarn leaving a two-inch tail and pull through the last chain. You can weave the loose ends at the beginning and the end into the top of the chain stitches on the last row and bottom of chain stitches on first row, using your crochet hook. This completes the bow portion of the bow tie.
  2. Crocheting a chain.

    Adding rows to a chain.

  3. For the middle section of the bow tie, chain 14. Turn, half double crochet in second chain all the way to the end of the row. Cut the yarn about two inches long at the end and pull through the last stitch. *Note: Do not hide ends. They will be used in the last step to attach the three parts of the bow tie.

  5. For the base of the bow tie, chain 6 stitches. Do half double crochet across. Turn and chain two. Half double crochet in the back loop of the chain and repeat this pattern as many times as necessary to make the base long enough to go around the person's neck, around 50 rows for an adult. For the last four rows before you reach 50 rows, you will need to make a buttonhole for the button to go through. (In the second picture, it shows two button holes in case the bow tie needs to be adjusted for an adult or child, but if making for an adult or a child, only one button hole is needed.) To do this, half double crochet in first stitch, chain one, skip a stitch and then half double crochet in next two stitches. Half double crochet three more rows until you reach a total of 50 rows. Cut the yarn leaving about two inches and weave the loose ends into top of chain to hide. Sew on a button at the other end of this part with a piece of yarn.
Wrap the middle section around the "bow" part and the bottom of the bow tie and attach using the two loose ends. Knot securely and then hide any remaining ends. Button bow tie around the neck.
  6. Continuing to crochet the bow end.

Adding loops to one bow end.

Adding a button to one side.
