Chain 48.
1 double crochet in 4th ch from hook = 2 dc
**Your ch 3 counts as a dc**
Ch 3, turn. 1 dc in the same space as the ch and in the next stitch = 3 dc
Ch 3, turn. 1 dc in the same space and in each of the rest = 4 dc
Ch 3, turn. 1 dc in the same space and in each of the rest = 5dc
Ch 3, turn. 1 dc in the same space and in each of the rest = 6dc

Ch 3, turn. Skip 2 stitches, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the next stitch. Skip 2 stitches, 1 dc in the last stitch = 6 dc, 2 ch
Ch 3, turn. Work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the ch 2 space. 1 dc in the last stitch.
Repeat the last step 10 times more for a total of 12 shell rows.
Ch 3, turn. 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch space, and remaining 3 stitches = 7dc
