With just a bottle cap, some thread and ribbon, you can create a nice pin or magnet for that special "Red Hat Lady" in your family or circle of friends!
Approximate Time: 1 Hour
Supplies:
- about 20 yards of double red crochet thread
- 8 inches purple ribbon
- purple flower
- soda bottle cap
- 3 inch by 3 inch scrap red felt
- 1.5 inch magnet or pin back
- hot glue gun set on cool
- crochet hook size "E"
- scrap newsprint
- optional: ripped fabric, buttons, feathers, jewels, etc.
Instructions:
- I used double strand thread, so measure out 20 yards of thread, then from that point, measure out another along with it.
- Top: Using a size "E" hook, chain 3 and make a DC (double crochet) in first chain from hook. That is your first 2 of 16 so make another 14 then join.
- Chain 1 and turn, making two SC (single crochets) in each stitch around. Join and chain 3, turn.
- Make 1 DC in each of the previous stitches, and do not increase. (This makes the work cup to fit over the cap).
- Brim: Make 2 DC's in each stitch from the previous row. Join and fasten off, working in tail.
Note: If you want a brim that ruffles a bit, give yourself another 2-3 yards of thread and make 3 DC's in each stitch instead of just 2.
- Using your cap, trace around a bit of red felt and spot glue that circle to the top of the cap. Since the top of the hat is what is seen most, you don't want the color of the cap to show through.
- Stuff the cap with news print and as the cap is upside down, make a felt circle to cover the bottom about 1/4 inch wider than the smaller one.
- Putting a dab of glue on the center and some around the edges of the circle, turn the hat over and set it on the felt, then just hold it down for about 30 seconds and the glue will set.
- Find the center of your 8 inches of ribbon, and put a bit of glue on that spot, then hold it to the bottom of the hat top, tie the ribbon around the hat top, making sure you have enough for a nice bow. You might have enough for two bows, so go for it if you do!
- Hot glue the flower to the top.
Note: Turn your glue gun to high, and once it is hot, put your pin back or magnet on. If you choose a pin back, make sure to position it so it is high enough on the felt, and that the bows are down at the bottom (like it would hang on a wall).
- Optional: If you want a different look, do a country with ripped fabric and buttons, do a really dolled up version with feathers and wider ribbon, or come up with something totally different.
