I have two dogs. When the older dog does his business outside the younger dog licks up the pee. Consequently the younger dog has horrible breath. They use a doggy door during the day when I am not home, so there is no way to let them out separately. Is there a way to stop this behavior or is there anything I can put in the water/food so that his breath is not so foul?

I found a tip on a site for Hydrogen Peroxide recently and have been using it for my dogs. It seems to be helping. I think it is good for their overall health, too. Here it is:
For small animals (dogs and cats) use 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 quart water for their drinking water and bath.
Hope this helps you! (11/16/2004)

Are you absolutely certain that the bad smell on your dog's breath is due to his/her habits? This may be a perfectly natural dog behavior entirely unrelated to the 'dog breath'. Most dog breath is related to tartar build up on the teeth. My dogs can eat a fishy leftover treat, but a few minutes later their breath is 'normal'. A large meaty bone every other day will clean their teeth and control odors, regardless of their unsavory canine habits!

We give our dog those Listerine tabs. They dissolve quickly and she likes the taste. It certainly helps her bad breath! (11/16/2004)

Bad breath is often times a symptom of health problems. I would take the dog to the Vet. (11/16/2004)
Hartz sells "breath strips for dogs". They are just like the Listerine pocket packs, but these are for doggies and they work too:) (11/16/2004)

I have a Pomeranian whose breath is horrible. It is due to the fact that her jaw teeth don't get the cleaning they should from her dry food and treats. We bought a doggy toothbrush and paste, found in the pet section in almost any department store. We brush them every night and after about two weeks noticed a significant difference. I also heard on Animal Planet about a mouthwash made from Tea Tree Oil. I missed the amounts of oil and water to be mixed. If anyone knows this formula, please post it. (01/15/2005)

Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. You just add it to their drinking water! It is doggy mouthwash developed from their people mouthwash. It will help keep tartar and plaque off their teeth, and clean off the tartar and plaque they do have. http://www.oxyfreshww.com/cjm (02/27/2006)

Do not use peroxide for bad breath, that is a remedy to make a dog vomit after accidental poisoning!
Do not give your dog peroxide for bad breath, it's very dangerous! (03/07/2006)

Do not use any mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide for your animals! Hydrogen peroxide is used for intestinal problems and will make your dog vomit to get rid of whatever is wrong in the intestinal tract. It is an "at home remedy", but you should immediately contact your nearest vet office for help.
Using hydrogen peroxide for bad breath is NOT the answer. It could cause serious problems for your animal. Use a dog Listerine first to see if that helps, and if it doesn't you might want to schedule an appointment with your vet to consider a tooth extraction and/or tooth cleaning. (08/06/2007)
