Most of my living room is currently black and brown. I've got a black leather and brown microfiber couch, black end tables and such, and a black entertainment stand. I've got a dark brown/reddish brown brick fireplace with a black screen. The carpet is a light tan. The walls are plain white. I rent so painting isn't really an option.
I am looking to add some color to the room and replacing the, currently brown, curtains seems to be the easiest and cheapest way to go about doing it. I will hopefully be adding other splashes throughout as I go also, once I decide on a color. I'm just not sure which color(s) would provide the needed color without overwhelming the room or making it feel lopsided.
It's a large window (approx. 8ft) just a few feet from the front door that takes up the majority of the one wall. It's also the only window in the room. So too much or too strong of a color seems like it could easily off set the room's balance.
What color(s) do you think would work the best to successfully "wake up" the living room without washing it out and/or overwhelming it? Other than the curtains, how else would you suggest integrating that/those color(s) to help keep the balance?

If I were you, I would go with white sheers or white sheers and white antique silk drapes. I would choose several paintings of things that I liked and perhaps colourful throw or two and matching cushions to add colour. However, others who are more daring with curtain colour might add a patterned curtain with coloured miniblinds in a shade of rust or deep red. I have seen that on a commercial on TV.
