My husband and I just bought our home and we have a gray sofa-sectional, but are debating on the colors for our curtains. Eventually, we want to stain our floors darker and paint our walls a very light gray (almost white). We want to have 2 levels of curtains. I think we should have a sky/light blue curtain with white sheer curtain in the back, but my husband wants a medium to dark gray curtain with the white sheer curtain in the back. I don't know if there's a term for the sheer white curtains or not. I was also thinking of white curtains. Our living room is really small. A lot smaller than it looks in the picture. Please help. Thank you!

The smaller the room, the lighter you want what's in it to be or it will look even smaller. I'd go with a curtain similar to the color on the walls, so they blend in.
I think Janet is right. The lines in your room are rather 'graphic'. Makes me wonder if something a little bold, yet 'neutral' might work. I found a picture of a while curtain with silver thread online. I don't know how readily available these curtains are, but do take a look.

Congratulations on your new home. I agree with both suggestions. Here's another idea. When looking at the second photo I see art work on the wall behind the tv. How about buying some toss pillows that are multicolored, the same as the art work. Have your white sheers and choose a color from the pillows/artwork for a valance on a beautiful rod. If you want a change for the seasons, it is easy enough to simply change pillows and the valance. Both can be purchased inexpensively. JCP is where I bought my valance. Also, you might want vertical blinds that open in one direction on your sliding glass door and a pretty valance over it. You may find a sheer curtain gets dirty quickly on a slider where you can wipe the blinds clean. I love your room. Grey is such a wonderful color.
Personally, I'd go with white or off-white curtains. I have had sheer nubbed material sheer drapes for years, and I love them. There are mini-blinds behind the drapes to darken the room if needed. In my previous house I had white room darkening drapes with white sheers for privacy. I do not like a valance in a living room as I think it makes a room look smaller.
I agree with Louise about draperies the same color or a shade darker, making the room appear larger. The reason this happens is, if you have draperies near the same color as the wall, there appears to be an uninterrupted view across the entire wall, creating a sense of spaciousness.
Golly, People,
I just took a look at the curtains in the link. The color is nothing like what I intended. The picture below, shows what I had in mind.
Dazee, I think the term you're looking for ("I don't know if there's a term for the sheer white curtains or not"), is 'panels', if they are flat, if not, they would be 'sheers'.
'Draperies' are a window treatment. They are usually heavier than regular curtains. Most are lined to provide weight, light blocking properties and proper 'hang'. Lined draperies usually last longer and keep their shape, longer.
Drapes is not a window treatment. Drape is not a thing. It is an action. Example: The lady draped the shawl over her shoulders/The sales counters were draped with sheets at closing.
But, draperies don't drape, they hang. So, why the heck are they called 'draperies'?
A wall hanging could drape, I suppose. If you loosely hung a tapestry or mural, it should have a bit of drape to it...or would that be 'sag'..........Since wallpaper hangers hang wallpaper, you would think wallpaper hangs. No, it adheres.....'night Y'all.
Well, here are your husband's medium grey curtains with white sheers in the back. Due to the color of the sofa, I chose a 'warm' grey. I like the curtain color, but.....I'm not sure it's the best choice.
The clock? Oh, yes. Good. I knew you'd like it.
My last suggestion. The lines on your television wall are all broken. They are hard on the eye and make the room look smaller. May I suggest all your wall hangings are at the same height as the top of your glass doors, creating one clean line. The lamps and shades are out of place. I suggest they be replaced with olive figurines or such. (Don't judge by my hastily inserted objects). The center wall hanging should be long and narrow, If possible, the same width or less than the TV screen. Do keep the overhead lamp dimmed to a minimum. The harsh reflected light will also make the room look smaller.
So, I changed my mind. Men can be fickle, too.
This drapery color may not be ideal, but it readily serves to illustrate a point. Darker colors appear farther away, creating an illusion of depth, hence, more room.
If this drapery were white or near white, it would appear closer, causing the room to appear smaller. At least, that's my humble reasoning.
