My sons are teenagers now and that makes scrounging up enough birthday candles a little more challenging. For this last birthday, I found these long candles from a past celebration. I just cut them in half and cleaned up a bit of the wax from the wick. The candles are only lit for a minute so the shortness didn't matter at all.

Great tip!
They also sell cheap candles at the Dollar Tree!
The BEST way to light birthday candles -- because previously lit candles ignite more easily and quickly than new candles.
At your leisure, before you put them on the cake, light and immediately blow out each candle. After arranging them on the cake you will be amazed at how just a touch of the match to the black, previously lit wick will ignite each candle.
Fewer burnt fingers and less wax on the icing ...
