I love chalkboard paint for use on many surfaces. They are typically found in blacks and greens, and can get more expensive in other colours. Here I'll show you how to make chalkboard paint in any colour you like, using either latex paint or acrylic paint. It's fun, it's easy, and it's quite the money saver!
Supplies:
- 3 parts latex paint
- 2 parts Plaster of Paris
- 1 to 2 parts water
- board or furniture to paint on
- masking tape
- paintbrush

Steps:
- Start by masking off any areas of your surface you don't want covered in paint.

- If you have little edges like I do here, use a pencil or sharp tool to get the masking tape to cling on.

- Place 2 parts plaster of Paris in a bowl.

- Add 1 part water.

- Mix plaster and water together until completely smooth.

- Add 3 parts latex paint. Mix well. If it's a bit thick, and this is common with this latex method, add water a tablespoon at a time until it's back to a paint consistency.

- Paint your surface with 3 coats. It dries rather quickly so you won't have to wait too long between coats.

- Peel off the masking tape.

- For the acrylic paint method, you won't need to add more water for the the 3-2-1 ratio. It's usually perfectly spot on. Just let the paint dry fully and use a piece of chalk to write your messages on your DIY chalkboard!
