DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - two finished carp streamers hanging outsideIn Japan, we like to fly streamers that look like carp fish. We call them Koinobori. They're typically flown on Children's Day, but at my house, we have them outside all the time. I wanted to make some myself, so here I have used toilet paper tubes and gift paper I had laying around the house. These are cute and cost next to nothing to make!

Supplies:

DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - supplies
 

Steps:

  1. Cut out a circle, fold it in half and use it as a guide for your fish scales on the tissue paper.
    2. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - use a paper circle folded in half as a template for cutting out the scales from tissue paper
     
  2. Fold tissue paper several times, then cut out a bunch of half circles.
    3. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - pink scales cut from folded tissue paper
     
  3. Cut in all the colours you'd like to use. I did one carp with 3 colours, and the other with 4 colours.

  4. Start from the bottom of the fish. Begin by gluing a scale at one end of the tube, leaving some hanging off.
    5. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - start at the bottom of a tube and glue on a scale allowing it to overhang the bottom
     
  5. Add another of a different colour, overlapping.
    6. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - add another scale of a different color, glue in on overlapping the first one
     
  6. Continue working your way up.
    7. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - continue working your way around and up
     
  7. When you make it to the top, glue the edges into the lip of the tube.
    8. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - at the top fold the tissue inside the tube and glue in place

  8. Now cut out several strips of tissue paper of the same colours as the fish. This will make the flowing tail.
    9. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - cut strips of tissue in the same colors as the fish to use as the tail
     
  9. Glue the strips to the inside of the lower lip of the tube.
    10. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - glue inside the lower end
     
  10. Cut out a white circle for each side of the fish for its eyes. Glue them on near the top of the tube on either side.
    11. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - cut out white circles for the eyes and glue in place near the top
     
  11. Draw a black circle in the center of each eye. Continue this whole process again to make another carp.

  12. Tie a piece of string onto your chopstick or dowel for each fish.
    13. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - tie a piece of string for each carp onto your dowel or chopstick
     
  13. Tape the ends of the strings to the inside tops of the tubes.
    14. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - tape the string into the top of each tube
     
  14. Lodge the chopstick somewhere horizontally if you're hanging them inside.
    15. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - lodge the stick horizontally if hanging inside
     
  15. They flow nicely outside in the wind.
    16. DIY Japanese Carp Streamer - fluttering in the breeze outside
