After our neighbors were vandalized, they installed outdoor motion detect cameras and flood lights. While I sympathize with their plight, I don't appreciate the blinding light that pours into my bedroom around the edges of my window treatments, keeping me awake. Did you know that medical research indicates that sleeping in a less-than-dark room can cause cancer, as the sleeping brain needs darkness to produce a helpful chemical process. Whatever -- I prefer sleeping in a very dark room!
I had some neutral colored foam boards (20 x 30 inches - basically a cardboard and foam "sandwich") leftover from a DIY project so I prop them against the window panes and draw the window treatments closed, which not only keeps out excess light but also wintry drafts. In the morning, when I open the drapes, I tuck the foam boards behind a bureau, allowing the sun to shine in through the glass. Last time I checked, one foam board costs $3.99, comes in many colors, and, now that nearby art shops and office supply stores have gone out of business, I can buy the boards at my grocery store in the school/office supply aisle.

The Dollar Tree - now The Dollar and .25 cent store sell the foam boards for 1.25. You can also get them at Dollar General too. I use them in my windows and they work.
Wow, Darlene, thanks! I'll swing by our nearest two $1 stores but they always look like a bomb went off in there!
I have the same issue. I have to lay down during the day
I go thru the same issue. So I bought black out curtains and I also have a sleep mask for my eyes. A lot of time I normally fall asleep and then I am refreshed when I get up.
Thank you for your comments - I've tried sleep masks but they slip off during the night or perhaps I take them off in my sleep (same with socks!). I tried blackout drapes but light still creeped in around the edges (problems with placement of the rods and grommet holes at the tops of the drapes), plus the backing of the drapes slowly broke down - foam boards to the rescue! Voila! Thanks again, Gem!
Yes, I agree that air purifiers are great! Especially in the bedroom where we spend 1/3 of our lives! Sweet Dreams!
