I found this sinister beauty on my front porch bench a few days ago. At first, it was so still that I was afraid it was dead, but when I touched its wing with a piece of paper, it moved.
Photo Description But if you enlarge the picture, you'll see the skull.
It looks like a Death's Head moth. I read on-line that these will make clicking sounds to repel predators, and it might even jump at you. From the side, it sort of looks like a bee.
Update: My butterfly expert friend told me that this isn't a death's head, though it's in the same family. It's a 5-spotted hawk moth.

I'm adding this to the main post and changing the title. So glad you got it identified. It is an impressive looking moth.
