Instead of the old fashioned tie-dye method, I'd like to "dip dye" a jacket into bleach in order to have the top look like normal denim and then "fade" into a paler version of the colour using bleach.
Anybody know how?

If you just want it faded, make a normal 1 cup washing machine solution and throw it in. Otherwise you might need to 'paint' on a bleach solution. Never use full strength bleach, or anything near it. It will rot the fabric. Try different techniques on an old piece of denim first.
However, just washing the jacket after bleaching in detergent does not stop the action of the chlorine. You need to wash the jacket in plain water once right away for a full cycle, after you have it the way you want it, then wash it again with adding 2- 8 oz bottles or one 16 oz bottle of regular peroxide in the wash water, letting it soak in the peroxide water a few minutes, agitate, and soak maybe 30 minutes, before letting it finish the cycle.
