Does anyone have any idea on how I might be able to disable a smoke detector that was left between the walls during a remodel? We just bought the home and the previous owner isn't much help.

You are going to have to cut a hole in the wall and remove the smoke detector. It may be hard wired into your house wiring. This is a big job for a non-electrician and non-drywaller. I would suggest you hire a handyman with electrical and drywall experience to do the job properly. They usually charge about a hundred bucks an hour. It shouldn't take much longer than an hour. The previous owner should pay for it. Call the lawyer who handled your house purchase.
