I've had my Pom-Chi for just about 2 months, he's only 3 1/2 months old. The past couple weeks I've noticed that he has been chewing on his skin on his front legs a lot and when he does that it has an odd sound like cartilage cracking. He has been itching constantly and it looks like he has dandruff! He has been loosing hair too on his stomach, chest, and front armpits. It's very thin. He is black and the hair there looks grey and if I pull gently on it, it comes out very easily.
I am very worried about my little baby:( I took him to the vet and we did tests for mites and they came out negative. She said that the normal hair loss for Pomeranians was on their legs and heads. He isn't losing any of that hair so it is an odd place for that.
I'm going to switch his food and get different shampoo to see if that will help, but please please help me! I'm very sad my little baby has to suffer like this.

I have a dachshund and have been battling itching, scratching and crusted skin for about 2 1/2 years. Went on GreatDaneLady.com and she had some very good advice about these conditions.
Take your dog for a thryroid test if that turns out good. Go on Nzymes.com and get the nzymes pak for allergies and within 6 months using the above in conjunction with shampoo and 4 Health or Blue dog food she is living a very good life relatively scratch free. Like some one else said the dog food you buy in the grocery store or pet store is full of stuff they don't need. Great Dane Lady is a very good source of information. Good luck!
This sounds a lot like a food allergy. But it also could be thyroid. There are good posts on this site about alternative diets for food allergy. My dog was allergic to many foods and I ended up feeding him brown rice and canned salmon until he died at 17 years old.

I would be interested to know how the tests turned out for the dog. I would wonder also if the dog is allergic to wheat or corn. Most dog foods are chock full of by products.
Start feeding him food that has no grain or wheat in it and only meat and not meat by products. The meat should be in the first three ingredients. The closer to the top the meat is listed, the better the food.
I am sorry to hear your dog is having problems. I am also wondering if he is allergic to something in the environment.
I give my dogs 1 to 2 mg of benadryl per pound of their weight when they have allergies. I would probably do one and a half mg of benadryl per pound of your dog.
Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. It is used for the treatment of allergiesand atopsy, primarily to stop itching.
(Atopy is an allergy to something that is inhaled, such as pollen or house dust; also called 'inhalant allergy.') It may also be used to control vomiting and motion sickness, as a mild sedative, and to treat muscle tremors due to certain toxins or medications.
Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences sleepiness, agitation, a rapid heart beat, depressed respiration, an inability to urinate, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite while being treated with diphenhydramine.
Benadryl for Dogs or Cats
Benadryl is a brand name for an anti-histamine (diphenhydramine). Although it is considered fairly safe for use in dogs and cats, please be aware that it does have potential adverse side effects. It may interact with other meds that your pet is taking, so do not use it without first consulting your veterinarian. You should also use extreme caution using Benadryl in dogs that have glaucoma, prostatic disease, cardiovascular disease or hyperthyroidism.
Benadryl is quite effective when used in proper dosages.

Good for motion sickness
Can be used as a mild tranquilizer
Good for snake bites
Useful for vaccination reactions
Good for bee stings and insect bites
Be sure to use only the plain Benadryl formula. Giving benadryl with other combination of meds could be fatal, so be sure to read the box. Make sure is is Bendadryl ONLY, not a combination of pain relievers.
Liquid Benadryl is too high in alcohol content to be safely used for animals. Please use capsule or pill form.

Do not use oatmeal shampoo on the dog ever in case it is a skin yeast infection.
Give the dog yogurt on a regular basis without sugar substitutes in it.
Make sure you are keeping the dog to the vets to find out what the tests results were.
Also give your dog a little bit of olive oil, just a little drop or two poured into your hand every day. This will moisturize them from the inside out.
If I find anything else out, I will let you know.
