Dog Won't Eat After Losing Puppies?

My dog Bella just gave birth April 16th this year. She had complications giving birth. The one she was able to push out was one that was stillborn. She was able to push one more out and it was healthy after that she wouldn't push. We took her to the vet to have a c-section but sadly the 5 other puppies were gone.

Now after a month she hasn't eaten since Tuesday April 3. We have tried dog food, chicken, anything else we could think of but she still won't eat. She also has been nipping at her pup, my family, my other dog. She ate 3 bites of canned chicken and threw it up. We are taking her to the vet Saturday if she won't eat by then. Any recommendations as to what's happening or any other of your pups experiencing this? If they have what did you do?

This is too long a period of time for your dog to go without eating.
does she drink water? If she drinks water you might try diluted chicken broth until you go to your vet tomorrow.

I believe it is essential that you take her to the vet ASAP as she has to be in a very weakened state and being in this condition makes her very susceptible to other health problems.
It's possible the vet will place her on intravenous fluids and may need to keep her for a few days. This will be very expensive but it may be necessary to save her life. Hopefully, she has not reached this stage.

Here is a link from the American Kennel Club about how to deal with this problem.

This is not an uncommon problem. Some of these answers may help deal with her after her vet visit.

For everyone who wanted to know how she was doing. Sadly she passed away yesterday Afternoon after we had to put her down. She threw blood up that smelt like death.

My family is still trying to cope with the death. Thank you for the answers and for wanting to know how she was doing. Hope you all have a lovely day/night

It's not unusual for a new mom to not feel like eating right away, but she should start eating again within several hours and absolutely within a day. But she stopped eating after a few weeks. I think you mean that your dog hasn't eaten since May 3rd, not April 3rd (May 3rd is just a Tuesday).

Most dogs can go about 3 to 5 days without eating food. I think your dog has some kind of infection. Contact your veterinarian. I hope she will recover soon.

Dogs grieve as well. Her hormones may also be off. A visit to the vet is warranted.

Thats what we was thinking that she was grieving.

She could very well have an infection from the C-section. Hope the vet caught it in time !!!!

Your dog could be suffering from electrolyte imbalance after labor, an infection in her uterus or mammary glands, a puppy that she never delivered that is now infected or more. I would strongly recommend having a vet look at her. Your vet will be able to run blood work and even X-rays if needed.

They will be able to recommend the best treatment plan for her and get her started on the proper meds, even appetite stimulants to help her feel better. I hope everything goes well with your dog and her puppy.
