We have two dogs. One is 10 the other is 2.5 years old. The older dog peed and pooped by the door on the carpet. Now both dogs do this even after being outside. We have shampooed this area many times and yet the younger one got out of his area right after being outside and peed and pooped. Is it a smell we can't pick up, but they can? What should I do?

Use an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle to remove the stain and smell.
There is a product called Folex that you can spray on and the rub onto the spot and blot up. It does a really good job removing the stains. You can also use it in a steam cleaner to clean that area with. I think I would try cleaning your carpet with a machine.
They can smell things we can't. We had this same issue when we had two pups and the older one, may she rest in peace, was incontinent. We had to block them out of the area to break the habit. When we allowed them back into the area, we blocked off "the spot" with a foot stool so they could not get to it.
