When a player draws from discard pile then during same turn decides she wants more from the pile, can she pick them up or does she have to wait until the next turn?
For example: A player had drawn from discard pile up 4 cards. Then after playing a meld saw that she could use another card in discard pile further up and wanted to draw more. Is that allowed or would she have to wait til next turn? Can't find it in any Rummy rules that I've read online.

There is nothing that says you cant in the rules. It does say to avoid drawing from the discard pile as much as possible and people will guess the hand you are trying to form.
I think you can not. my mom keep fighting over this. she'll pick up say 3-4 cards from that discard pile and suddenly will go to pick up a few others. can you or can't you? I say when you pick from pile, you can't decide afterwards that you need more. You have to wait til next turn. Just like you can't call rummy if the other person is in the middle of their turn.
There's some good information for playing Rummy right here on Thrifty Fun:

When something is going on that is not in the rules, it can sometimes be resolved by more professional players.
Some friends use these two sites to settle any disagreements in understanding the rules.
