Dyeing Hair After Bleaching?

Recently I had scalp bleached my hair and it is very unhealthy and brittle, and snapping greatly in some areas. I am naturally a brunette. I hate my hair like this and I regret dyeing it blonde. How long do I have to wait to dye my hair again? I am not bleaching it. I am just going to put in a semi-brunette colour.

My best answer is: if your hair is this badly damaged, it should not be subjected to further chemical treatments. You should live with it or wear a wig until it all grows out.

My second best answer is: Apply a temporary brunette color, such as a weekly rinse. If you choose to go with a semi permanent color, choose one which has no oxidizers, catalysts or boosters of any kind. Above all, and I do mean above all, do a strand test to a small area at the nape of the neck before applying the solution to the entire head.

I can never find a comment button in these archived articles, only reply or answer buttons. That's why my comments here are written as a reply.

First, I think I must have missed the class in which we were taught about the 'nutrients' contained in the hair. My instructor was 70 and taught cosmetology for forty years. I never knew him to teach about 'nutrients' in the hair.

Secondly, I would like to address the header paragraph. I think the opening sentence begs for clarification. Hair can be 'dyed' immediately after bleaching with no harm done. In fact, it is done every day.

Rarely is hair bleached professionally and left in the bleached stage. The bleaching is done to remove natural pigment from the hair so that a lighter shade of color will 'show' when applied. (Suppose you had dark brown hair and wanted it to be a light platinum. If you applied a light platinum color to your hair without first removing the dark brown natural pigment with bleach, you wouldn't be able to see the platinum that was applied to the hair (if in fact any platinum color was absorbed by the unbleached hair)).

To go from dark brown to light platinum, most all of the natural pigment must first be removed from the hair with bleach. This will leave the hair pale yellow (near white).
Then, a light platinum toner is applied to the hair.

Toners are 'dyes' just as regular 'dyes', but producing lighter and more delicate results. They further lift pigment from the hair while depositing color at the same time.

Except for those with exceptionally sensitive scalps, all bleached and toned (dyed) procedures are done in one sitting. That is to say, immediately after the bleach is rinsed from the hair and the hair is gently towel dried (or blown near dry), a toner (again 'dye') is applied to the hair.

With the above said, I wholeheartedly agree that the improper use of 'dyes' soon after bleaching could damage the hair. Do note that the wrong selection and incorrect application of 'dyes' to bleached hair will cause just as much damage whether applied the same day as bleaching or a week later.

And now for my pet peeve. In the profession, the term 'dye' is passé, and has been for at least half a century. I would not consider having work done by a hairdresser who suggests I have my hair dyed or asks if I want a dye job. Color, tone, highlight, etc. are the terms acceptable to the professionals of today.

There are natural hair dyes you can use that have no harsh chemicals in them. Most of them are vegetable based dyes. Make SURE you do the strand test first! But this is what we used at the hair salon I worked at. Read your labels... they will say "no harsh chemicals", "vegetable based formula".
