This is the easiest dishwasher magnet to make and will last for years. Take a clean plastic lid (I used an icing lid) and cut the edge off. Write "clean" on one side and "dirty" on the other with a Sharpie marker. Use stick-on magnets with a really strong adhesive. Stick one on one side and one on the other.

Very good idea!
What is the purpose of these magnets? I don't own a dishwasher so I have no idea. Googling led me to lots for sale but nothing about what they actually do.
The idea is to let everyone know if the dishes in the machine are "Clean" or "Dirty" - I was just going to use magnetic letters, however, stainless steel dishwasher fronts will not hold on to magnets! Glued the letters together, put a string for hanging and put a Command hook on the DW.
Correct, it is to let people know right away if the dishes are clean and need to be put away, or if they are dirty and need to be added to or washed. So everyone is on the same page.
I usually flip mine to "clean" when I start the wash cycle and "dirty" the moment I empty the washer.
...And to be frugal, one doesn't run the dishwasher til it's full. So, that means, whether clean or dirty, most of the time, the dishes are in the dishwasher rather than on a cabinet shelf.
