Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 105 Posts One of the most difficult parts about gardening and growing your own vegetable is stringing them up to keep them off the ground. A lot of people will use a garden trellis or pole to keep their green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes off the ground. However, I find that making an open A-frame enclosure works best.
Total Time: 2 hours
Yield: 1 or 2 lines
Supplies:
- 6 foot long branches or sticks
- heavy nylon cord or nylon rope
- garden string
Steps:
- Place the poles about 1 to 2 feet deep in the ground. The poles will sit on the outside of your line. The poles should be placed about 3 to 6 yards apart. This will depend on how long your line is.
- If you have two lines you'll need to place the poles on both sides of the lines. Otherwise, the poles will be placed on the back side of your line.
- Pull the two poles together at the top and attach.
- You'll now string 3 lines of nylon or nylon cord to the poles. At the beginning and the end of your line you will anchor your cord. Therefore, youll need a piece of iron or wood in the ground about 3 feet from your pole.
- The nylon cord is placed at the bottom, middle, and top of your wood.
- Cut your garden string 6 inches longer than the length of the three lines of nylon. For example, if you measure the bottom nylon line to the top nylon line it should measure around 5 ½ to 6 feet depending on the length of your poles. Prepare your cord; cut the cord to 6 or 6 ½ feet pieces.
- Starting at the bottom, tie one end of the cord to the nylon runner. Bring the cord to the middle runner and wrap it around the runner. Tie the cord in a half bow at the top of the last runner.
- Each cord should be placed where the tomato, cucumber, or green bean plants are. As the plants grow, they will attach to the cord and grow up each line.
- This is a simple way to control the tomato, cucumbers, and green beans in your garden to keep them off the ground.
