Awhile back I brought cupcakes to my friend. She did the strangest thing before eating one. She broke the bottom off of the cupcake and plopped it on top of the frosting, like a lid.
After laughing about it, I asked her why she did that. She told me that it keeps the frosting off of her fingers. I couldn't help but take a photo so that I could share this tip with other people. It honestly is a great way to keep from getting messy if you don't have a fork handy! :)

I see this is a very old post, but still, I wanted to comment that breaking the bottom off of the cupcake and putting it on top, like a frosting sandwich, is the only way my brothers and I ever ate cupcakes since we were growing up in the 1950s. We didn't do it for "less mess" reasons, we did it because it distributed the flavor better than just plain cake in the bottom half of a bite and sugary frosting on the top half.
LOL! I'll have to try that, the next time I get a cupcake! I like the idea that it evens out the textures and flavors, but I tend to doubt that it's much neater, as crumbs tend to fall.
