Total Time: 30 minutes

Yield: 1 swan

Supplies:

Edible Apple Swan - supplies

Steps:

  1. Cut the apple in half vertically a little bit outside the core. One side will be slightly larger than the other. As you make cuts exposing the fruit, dab on some lemon juice to keep it from browning.
  2. Edible Apple Swan - cut the apple in half vertically, slightly outside the core, one piece will be a tiny bit larger

  3. Pop the apple seeds out and set aside to use for the swan's eyes later.
  4. Edible Apple Swan - save the seeds for use later as the eyes

  5. Place your 2 butter knives on the outsides of your larger apple half. Slice downwards right outside the core, stopping when you hit the butter knives.
  6. Edible Apple Swan - prop the apple up on two butter knives and cut down, slightly off the core, until you hit the knives

  7. Now come in from the side, cutting along the butter knife guides to cut out a wedge.
  8. Edible Apple Swan - use the knives as a guide and cut from the outside to create a wedge

  9. Pop out the wedge. Repeat this on the other side so you make a T shape at the core.
  10. Edible Apple Swan - remove the wedge and repeat on the other side

  11. Now take one of the big wedges and cut straight down, about 1/4 inch in from the edge. Stop at the butter knife guides.
  12. Edible Apple Swan - take a wedge and cut down 1/4 inch from the edge stopping at the knives

  13. Now cut in horizontally against the guides.
  14. Edible Apple Swan - cut horizontally along the guides

  15. Repeat this a couple more times inside each wedge until you have 3 wedges and a mini end piece wedge. Put the wedges back in place, then slide them back a bit, forming the wings.
  16. Edible Apple Swan - repeat to create three more wedges and a mini edge wedge. Put them back together and then slide back to form the wings

  17. Put the 2 wings on the upside down T shaped apple base.
  18. Edible Apple Swan - place wings on the upside down apple t-shaped base

  19. Now we'll make the swan's head. Take the other reserved apple half and cut out a 1/4 inch disk.
  20. Edible Apple Swan - using the other half cut a 1/4 inch disk

  21. Cut in half diagonally.
  22. Edible Apple Swan - cut in half diagonally

  23. Now cut the outer half of the apple so a piece is removed from the center. This outer piece will be the swan's beak/head/neck.
  24. Edible Apple Swan - cut off the peel side to create the beak, head, and neck

  25. Trim the neck so it's not too long. You can make this as long or short as you'd like.
  26. Edible Apple Swan - trim the neck so it is not too long

  27. At the front of the base T shape, remove the apple stem and cut out a rectangle slot the same size as the swan's neck.
  28. Edible Apple Swan - remove the stem from the base and cut a rectangular slot the size of the neck

  29. Press an apple seed into either side of the swan's head, then place this into the slot you just cut.
  30. Edible Apple Swan - press a seed into each side of the head

Hi Attosa,

I totally love your swan apple. To get my hubby to eat apples, instead of just drinking apple juice, I've always cut them up into pieces and stuck each one with those different colored fringed toothpicks to make the pieces look even more desirable and then

he'll eat them, haha But now, I can make your creative "bird" hehe and I think it will be a hit! :)
Thank you for sharing this way to go.

You are so welcome! A good way to get some people to eat these apple swans is to throw them in a peanut butter pool! :D Haha! I know it works for my parents! ;) I hope you try this for your hubby!

Wow, that is a GREAT idea! Yes, spread some peanut butter on a small plate, and maybe nuked a tad to melt it out a bit, then the swan on top. I really like that, yes, a swipe in the peanut butter with the apple, yummy! Thanks! :)

Attosa,

I didn't go "all the way" and make the swan yet out of the apples, but we did try apple slices (dipped in peanut butter) as you'd suggested, and we'd had never had that before - and now....it's going to be something we eat a whole lot more often.

My goodness is that delicious! Who'd of known? hahah we sure didn't...and I'm so glad you suggested it. Forget celery and peanut butter, APPLE is the way to go! It reminded me (the taste) of candied apples...soooo yummy. I heated the peanut butter in the microwave just for a few seconds, to get it softer than it is out of the jar, and ohhhh total yummy goodness.

Thank you for that tip! It's wonderful :)

Oh my gosh you'd never had it?! Isn't it DREAMY? I seriously cannot get enough of it. I've been making my own peanut butter and cashew butter lately and it's been sooo good on these crisp apples. Ugh look what you've done, Suz! I'm going to have to go have some now :D HAHA! !! !

Hi Attosa,

I'd never even heard of it, isn't that something.

And yes, the apple slices swiped in peanut butter...was
shockingly delicious. I mean I thought oh yes, that sounds
really good when you posted it, but...it tastes EVEN BETTER than imagined.

We love it, it's going to be a staple snack for us to eat anytime we eat apples now, *that's how much it was a hit* because they really won't be as good without it.

Thank you Attosa! :)

Attosa,

What tip do you have for nectarines? hehehe I'm playing (sort of)
but heck, without you mentioning the peanut butter on apples, we
still wouldn't know of it, and what a loss that would be because that
was extraordinarily delicious.

Ooo nectarines! Try grilling them and sprinkling them with cinnamon and the tiniest touch of salt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sounds weird but it's great. The sprinkle of salt will bring out the sugar formed from cooking them, and the cinnamon will really bring out the hidden notes from the nectarine flavour!!!

Oh yes! Now I can sort of taste that in my "mind" thinking of the flavors, but I'm sure it's even better tasting it in my mouth! :)

And I do understand about the salt how that's needed for the to bring out the sweet, but I'm glad you said to use that for the nectarines.

YUMMMM....okay, that will be something SOON to do for sure!

Thank you so much Attosa :)
