I was washing my clothes and also using my dryer to dry clothes. I went up stairs and then into my room. When I came back downstairs I smelled a burning smell and they were not running. I'm not exactly sure how the electric is set up in my house, but I have a light in the wall above my machines that I turned on, but when I tried to turn my washer back on there was a low quiet hum and the light dimmed to 25% of its brightness and it still didn't turn on. The same thing for the dryer when I tried to turn it on. The smell is really strong of gas or something, but I'm not sure what is going on. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in and unplugging one and trying to turn on the other. Nothing worked. I don't think it's the dryer or washer, just electrical.

Electrical problem.
Step 1
If you suspect a gas leak call the gas company right away.
Step 2
Are you sure the washer belt didn't burn out or break?
Step 3
It's doubtful because both the washer and dryer are doing the same thing.
Step 4
You may need to contact an electrician it could be a fire hazard.
