Eligibility for Social Security Survivor Benefits?

My aunt, 67, was married to my uncle, who was a US Citizen collecting Social Security. He just passed away a month ago. My aunt is in the beginning process of adjusting her legal status as she doesn't have a Social Security number and entered on a visitor's visa years ago, but it's now expired.

I want to know if she can collect survivor benefits now or how long does she have until she can collect? The process of adjusting her status may take 6 to 9 months. Will it be too late by then?

Only the Social Security Administration can answer your questions. She can make an appointment with the SSA to start and bring copies of all papers. The sooner she applies, the fast the answer and benefits, if due, usually start on the date of the first application.
