I have custody of my grandson and some years ago his father died. He was on disability and I am not sure if he ever worked. Can he get some type of benefits due to the death of his father?

It depends on how much he made. I would make an appointment with social security. Make sure you bring documentation.
G-d bless you for caring for your grandson!
Your question is very complicated and there are so many variables that it is impossible for someone who does not have all the info to give you a good answer. What I can offer is a place to get you started to find what is available:
My suggestion to get you started in your quest is to find your local state representative if you are in the US and ask him or her to sit down with you and all of the facts and look at avenues to help you get any benefits you are due.
There may be a variety of options available to you depending on the circumstances.
Be sure to ask them what all you will need to bring so they can help you.
I found my person by putting my town name in Google and the phrase state representative. My guy was local, on the bus route, and their office was very kind. The services (including notary) were all free (since it is paid by tax money).
Be sure to talk about things like did the father have a will, did the father work, was there a child support arrangement if the child's parents had one, does the child have health insurance, does the child have any disabilities, are you fostering him, adopting him, just caring for him. Is the mom still alive?
Post back with an update and prayers that you find solutions. Also be sure to ask about support services for you as the caregiver. In some towns there are support groups specific to grand parents raising grand babies and that can be very valuable to you in your role!
