Emergency Kitchen Candle

Silver Post Medal for All Time! 449 Posts

burning candleI learned this idea from my mom three years ago. We used to have rotational brownouts in our area and sometimes we won't have the chance to charge our emergency lights or even our phones. It would be too costly to buy candles for that purpose and candles easily melt. So, here's an amazing idea I would like to share to everyone.

Total Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1

Supplies:

All the needed supplies on a blue plate.

Steps:

  1. Put 3 tablespoons of salt inside the glass. Press it to level the salt into place.
  2. Adding the salt to the jar.

Salt has been added to the glass jar.

  3. Pour the cooking oil into the glass of salt.
  4. In the next step your oil is poured over the salt.

View of the open jar with salt layer and oil.

  5. Loop the cotton around a piece of stick.
  6. Readying a cotton ball to fashion a wick.

Cotton ball twisted around a small stick.

  7. Insert the stick in the middle of the glass, this will serve as the candle wick. The salt will stabilize the stick into position.
  8. Inserting the cotton ball wick into the jar.

  9. Light it up with a match stick or a lighter.
  10. Lit match.

  11. Now you have a candle made from items found in the kitchen. It will last longer than a candle and is much safer to use.
  12. Burning wick inside the jar.

I am confused about the cotton ball. Do you put the cotton ball into the oil once it is wrapped around the stick and light the stick? Or the reverse? And do you use the whole cotton ball?

Its confusing to me as well because it doesnt say how long it burns but I did notice that some of the photos will slide to the side and it shows another view of it. Im wondering how the cotton will stay on the stick. Going to go try it and Ill write back with how it goes

It says it will burn longer than a candle so I think it should be more than a minute. I don't have any extra oil right now or I would try it to see how it works.

I remember reading about a similar technique in the Little House books.
