I have a new puppy. I started out making her food and was told by my veterinarian that homemade food is not a good idea for puppies because they need more vitamins and such for growing. I was making her food using hamburger, brown rice or oatmeal, carrots, chick peas, green peas, green beans, broccoli, pumpkin, and I was adding a multi vitamin/minerals. I would cook the hamburger and the rest was added. I used raw frozen veggies and all was ground.
Is this really a bad idea? We had a dog that developed allergies so I started making her food when she was about 2 years old, but not when she was a puppy. I am not feeling very good about giving her kibbles, but I am also concerned that the vet may be right.
Thanks for any input on the diet I was feeding and if it is a bad idea to feed homemade to puppies.
Thanks!

I would take your vets advice. A 2 year old dog is an adult, and has been for awhile.
Please follow the vet's advice. Puppies need very specific nutrients and the vet can recommend the safest food from the store or some sell special puppy foods and mother's milk depending on how young the pup is.
Ground beef often causes pancreatitis in dogs so definitely stay away from that for dogs of any age.
Vet appoved use of white meat of chicken can be used when prescribed for a health condition or post surgical care. Some dogs are allergic to chicken so be sure to monitor output, skin (rash, itching, fur loss) and respiratory behavior until you know the dog is not allergic. Tell the vet immediately if you see anything odd after consumption.
If you feel you must make your own food for an adult dog, only use vet approved recipes and make sure the pup gets annual checkups.
Prayers for you and your pups!
I fed our 15 year old dog beef for about 12 years due to all her allergies, never had a problem. I personally believe dogs are like people....Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean.
I did cook for my dog who had serious allergies. It worked but I studied a lot before I started. A couple weeks at least. What sounds like an ok diet may not be.
