Black mold is growing on the painted walls of the hallway near ceiling. This hall has a furnace and is near a bathroom. It's been about 2 years since the house has been lived in. I noticed a very musty smell when we bought the house to resell. I assumed it was from being closed up and vacant. We have tried cleaning it with bleach with little results of removing it and now the walls are discolored. What will take mold off? Will paint cover and stick? Could the furnace be the source?

In order to have mold, you have to have moisture. If it is very bad, you will need to replace the sheetrock. You need to trace the pipes to see where they run. Make sure you have return air ducts that are open. It could be the furnace and ductwork.
Do you have a gas hot water heater? If so, it has a vent pipe that goes up to the roof. Check that.
The bathroom would also have a vent that goes up to the roof. If either of these vents is leaking and is located behind that wall, that can cause it.
Installing a ceiling fan would help as would a dehumidifier.
You could have a roof or plumbing leak which is letting moisture sit behind the walls. This is letting the mold grow. You need to find the leak. You may have to replace Sheetrock
