Finding Free Furniture?

My two girls, boyfriend, and I moved and we don't have any furniture. We sleep on the floor and also eat on the floor. Is there any organization that could help us?

Didn't you have furniture before? Go to your nearest Salvation Army Office and tell them what you need, they will give you a voucher to take to their Thrift Store. The store will give you the items on the voucher IF they have them. Be aware that most of these stores won't let you pick from the best furniture that they have because that can be sold for a better price than the less desirable pieces.

They also will only give you necessities, no electronics. The way bed bugs are in the country right now, I would be real leery of free furniture, unless it would be from people that you know real well. Also a lot of the time places like the Salvation Army expect you to be able to transport your free furniture. That being said a person can get inexpensive air mattresses to use as beds.

I have three adult grandkids that have done that for years because they can't afford beds.

Chairs can be cheap folding chairs, or the plastic looking patio chairs. The large plastic storage bins/totes can be used as dressers and end tables. You can sit on a chair and hold your plates while eating. I have a daughter who does the same thing you did, and I don't give her any sympathy. I also have a friend that does the same thing and she doesn't get any sympathy either.

I live off $700 a month and 15 years ago when I decided to relocate, I planned several months ahead to make sure I could rent a U-Haul because that would be cheaper than replacing my furniture and I didn't want to go begging for freebies. I had better than that and I wanted better than that.

My Mother taught me many years ago that if you don't have something kind to say, don't say anything at all. Redhatter, I am sorry to say this but I find most of your answers to be very abrasive, and rarely helpful.

Hey there! Check the free section of your town's craigslist.org or freecycle. Also, check with anyone you know in your new area. Tell them you are on the lookout for furniture - a lot of people have extras they are willing to part with.

You can also make requests on freecycle.org or craigslist for what you want/need. You would be surprised how many people are willing to give it for free.
