I desperately need furniture for myself and two children. We lost everything before moving and I just got a job and my own place, but do not have any furniture at all. We need as much help as we can get.

Put in ads in Freecycle and Craigslist. You can also find a lot of stuff at the curb, especially when people are moving.
Yes, people are always giving free furniture away on Craigslist.
Under For Sale > Free > And search the listings or type in furniture, bed, mattress - whichever you're looking for.
also join the facebook groups in and around your neighborhood to see if people are giving things away and/or to ask for help. it's also a good way to track garage sales which can eventually lead to free stuff.
Craigslist has a section called "free stuff" -- you'll usually have to pick it up yourself but it is well worth it!
to add to the free curbside idea, find out when trash day is in your city or neighborhood. Even better, figure out when trash day is in a fairly affluent neighborhood in your town, then go out there the day before. I once found a vanity set that was being thrown out that I flipped for $50 at a subsequent yard sale!
also, go to a college town or a neighborhood where lots of students live, in late April/May, as people are graduating. A lot of time they just dump furniture.
