Finding Free Furniture?

I've mental health issues and just moved into my own flat. I have no furniture, kettle, pots, pans, etc. Where can I find free or inexpensive items?

Go to freecycle.org you can join and list the things you need. You have to sign up make sure you use your own geographical area. You need to put your zip code in the memo box. Do not give out your address or anything personal.

When you go to pick up items take someone with you. Only meet in a public place. You can also shop at Goodwill stores or second-hand shops. Also try yard sales.

I'd go to the free stuff section of Craigslist in your area.

Suggestions given here will most likely be for the US only so they may not be of any help if you do not live in the US.

You say you have mental health issues so it would seem that you are on a disability program somewhere. Did this organization help you acquire your own flat?

It seems that whoever is supplying funds for your flat should also be helping you acquire the necessities you need as far as bedding, some furniture and utensils.

Is there some reason this is not being done? Have you asked this organization for help with acquiring these things?

Do you have a social worker or place where you go when you need assistance with doctors or other needs? Who supplies your food and pays your rent and utilities? Any of these places should be able to help you with finding what you need.

It is not just a matter of finding furniture and other things but there is the problem of getting it delivered as not many people giving items away have any intention of delivering them and setting them up in someone's house.

If you are unable to get help through any of your present assistance programs then you should try to locate a near by church and ask them for help as they may have someone that can help with delivering items.

Local Salvation Army, Goodwill, church thrift stores may be able to find something for you but getting it delivered may still be a big problem.

There is an organization called Nextdoor and it is a neighborhood thing so you might find someone that can help you through their web site.

When you search on Craigslist under For Sale > Free, you can find a lot of items people are giving away that may be useful to you.

Also on Facebook some people are giving items for free or selling at a low cost in addition to local thrift stores. You can check out garage sales, too.

Where to get free furniture and other household items? Has this question really been answered?

  • It seems that most responders give the same suggestions/advice... Craigslist, Freecycle, thrift stores, etc.

  • But no one seems to want to address the delivery problem. Sure there are lots and lots of free stuff offered on many of these places (maybe only in the US) but will they deliver that "free" stuff?
  • If you answer some of these "free stuff" ads most of the time they say "come and get it - bring help".
  • Many times the person asking this question does not have transportation to even pick up small items and very little money for gas to make many trips.
  • Many of these ads are from too far away places to even be feasible for someone in these circumstances to pick up.
  • That means they either have to have friends with suitable transportation (maybe a truck or a car and trailer) and enough manpower to pickup and deliver items to their home which might even be on the third or fourth floor.

  • The person asking this question probably does not have transportation, is new to an area, may not have friends that have the necessary means to help and they might be lost answering one of these ads where pickup is expected.

Sometimes I think we are too quick to give a "pat" answer/suggestion without giving a little more thought to what kind of situation the person asking the question may be in.

I have recently "answered" some of the ads on Freecycle and Craigslist and many were some distance away and I have been unable to find even one ad where the stuff would be delivered to my place. Sometimes the "giver" is sympathetic but felt they were doing enough by just giving stuff away.
This is not to say that someone would not deliver but when actually placing furniture inside a person's home - who will be willing to do that?

I'm not saying that I have the answers but I do not like giving people false hope with just "give away - free sites" to visit.
It seems that we are many times giving answers to this type of question with someone like ourselves in mind and what we might be able to do.
I sincerely hope that my thoughts/remarks do not offend anyone as I am asking these questions of myself also.
