Finding Free Furniture
A mattress is always best new. Contact the United Way in your city and see if there is an organization that specializes in giving new bedding to folks in need. There is such a group in my city.
For a sofa, Judy gave you a list of places.
Sending up prayers for you and yours that you find what you need.
Look in the free stuff section of craigslist.org
and do a search on "free mattress" and "free sofa" on nexdoor.com
Search the free section on Craigslist, Freecycle, Nextdoor.org, and local free newspapers. Place a "wanted" add on all of those sites and be sure to check everyday.
Most important - do you have help to pick up anything that is free?
Do you have a small truck for picking up items? If not then you should try to make some kind of arrangements as most people will not want to help loading (or unloading) and most likely will not deliver anything.
The exception may be Nextdoor as that will be in your neighborhood and maybe someone would help - at least a little.
If you can show a true need, you may be able to get help from the Salvation Army or Goodwill but they will not load and they will not deliver.
you can always find people listing free furniture on craigslist, freecycle, facebook marketplace, trashnothing, on the selling apps Letgo, offerup..among all these places try dumpster diving for some pieces of furniture i would not suggest getting a mattress this way though. Find out in your surrounding areas when garbage pick up is and check around to see what some people have tossed out, at times they will have a sign next to it saying FREE
