I need some free stuff, including a sofa and cooker, but I don't know where to start.

Go to the office of your local Salvation Army and tell them what you need and they will give you a voucher to take to their Thrift Store. If the store has the items that you need they will give it to you free. However in most places you will have to have a way to transport to your home. In most places they will have a section of items that people can get free, and it won't be the nicer furniture. You could also speak to the pastor of your church, he might know somebody in the congregation that would have some extra things that they would be will to give you.
Go to freecycle.org and sign in for your state and town. They started out to keep things out of the landfill. People give away things instead of throwing them away...
Almost every area has a freecyle. If you're from, say the Atlanta area, then type freecyle.com/Atlanta into your browser. You can also just type in your city after the slash. It should take you to that page or to a city page close to your city. There you will find all kinds of things that people give away free. You can respond to anything on the page. However, you cannot ask for anything until you give away something yourself. I've gotten a treadmill, bunkbeds for the grandkids, and given away a dryer and older couch.
You could go on bisman if you are in the Bismarck mandan area
