You can search the free section on craigslist - good luck!
Place a want ad on Freecycle or Craigslist. Go around neighborhoods the night before garbage day. Go to apartment complexes the end/beginning of month when people move.

It all depends on where you live. Craigslist is a good start. Also Yard sales, and auctions are good places to find bargain furniture. If it's outdated looking, you can always give it a new look with a coat of paint.
Craigslist would be a good resource to visit. If you are on Facebook, they have a sale section where sometimes people give free or sell inexpensive items on there.
