I lost my apartment due to a fire. The Red Cross did pay for a hotel for three days. I'm still without a place to go and feeling lost by the system.

It isn't up to the system to help you. If you are in the system already, you only get so much help a month. Most counties have a County Welfare Office, look them up and maybe they can help you with deposit and rent for one month. I don't know if you received other help from the Red Cross other than three nights in a motel. If not when you do get another place, you should be able to get a certain number of towels, bedding, etc. from them.
If your Red Cross does things like this what they will do is give you vouchers to take to a store to purchase these items. It used to be that a person would get one set of bedding and I can't remember how many sets of towels.
Also consider that you won't get to pick from their best items and it will be for the actual necessities, no TV or electronic things. Also if the fire wasn't your fault the landlord should be reimbursing you for some things.
