The lumber is free just; I just want them cut down. They are on the property we just bought. How do I find someone to do this?

Unless you have a large number of trees on many acres of land, it is unlikely that anyone will want them for lumber. Lumbering is big business, and people involved in it don't come to cut down half a dozen trees. You MAY find someone who would cut them down for you for firewood. How many trees are you talking about?

If you let someone come onto your property who is not a professional - not licensed, bonded, with an assumption of skill - you are opening yourself up for trouble. Sometimes even only one tree can be very valuable. It depends on the age of the tree the size and the shape of its trunk or its biggest branches. Last year, out of the total of the 3000 that will be needed to rebuilt the roof of the church Notre Dame de Paris, 8 oak tree trunks that will be used to rebuilt the spike of the church were transported from their native forest to the sawmill. Only 8, 300 years old oak trees weighing 15 tons each that are not as large as you would expect. The diameter of their trunk is only 2 meters, but the trunk has a useable length of 20 meters and has a light bending and it is this special bending criteria that made them be prefered to others because that bent makes them resist pressure better than the perfectly straight ones because the trunk of an oak tree can not be bent on demand.
You can also look for coopers to ask them if themselves or a special sawmill could be interested. Oak tree wood is still the favorite for barrels to age Scotch and American whiskey and many spirits as well and it is still the only one used to age the Cognac and the Armagnac.
Check for a Craigslist page for your area and place an ad for firewood or lumber. You can offer it for free if it is your desire to just get it done.

A few things to consider -
1) if the trees are close to any buildings, be careful who cuts them down. Don't want to damage any property.
2) Plan on the process to take a while. Cutting down the tree, cutting the tree into pieces that will be manageable. Loading the wood...
3) Most will NOT take branches with leaves. You need to consider if they must take all of the tree or all of the trees. Or if you have a chipper to clean up the remains (cheap wood chips for your landscaping).
4) Will you help them? What kind of help? Do they need to bring their own equipment?
5) Do you need to be their while they are? This type of project will leave marks on your lawn - it can not be helped. Be prepared. Have fun with them.
6) Listing how many and types helps. Guessing on height and diameter or circumference with pics will get faster results.
Providing as much info as you can up front eliminates tons of questions. I would place it under the free category and the Farm and Garden category.

You would get the best response from woodworkers who harvest their own trees and have them milled.. the Middle guy,, not a tree arborist, and not a tree buyer.. this way you'll get the best job at the fairest price.. I have paid for trees, but I only want the log.. or I clean up everything and have the stump removed but I don't pay the owner.. Fair..
