Finding a Free Mattress and Boxspring?

I'm on SSD and disabled. I'm in need of a queen size boxspring and mattress. The one I have is over 12 yrs. old. Can someone please give me some ideas on who to contact or where to look? I would be so grateful. Once my rent, utilities, and auto insurance are paid my head is hardly above water.

Your biggest problem may not be in finding a bed but may be in getting someone to deliver a queen size bed and mattress and also removing the one you have and hauling it to a dump site. This can be a big job and will definitely require more than one person. This means someone will be giving away a bed/mattress AND paying for a truck and gas AND giving several free hours of somewhat hard work/labor for 2 or more people. I am only mentioning this as many people do not realize that something like this may require more than just finding something on Craigslist or Freecycle. Now if you are a member of a local church - someone there may be willing to go through all of this if they feel there is a real need.

Hopefully you have someone in your family that can help with all of this if you are fortunate and find a free bed. Most likely, no matter who helps you, used bedding is what you will get, so be sure that you are not getting some bedbugs along with your "gift".
I would suggest maybe going to a smaller size bed (even a single?) which may be easier to find and easier to move. You may have to ask for free linens from one of these sites.

You are very correct in saying this! I know because this happened to me...I used to go 2 this Drs office that was big into helping low income people by introducing them to local resources. They also provided transportation for patients (like me) who otherwise had no way to the Dr. I can't remember how it came up but at some point I obv told the driver about my awful mattress bc one day the receptionist told me she could write a recommendation letter to this place on my behalf where I could get a mattress. I told her that'd be great but I didn't know anyone with a truck to get it to my house (over 30 miles away). She told me to ask the driver bc she was pretty sure he had access to one. He told me he could help so she did the paperwork & I received a call from the agency with a date & time to pick up my queen sized mattress. I told the driver and it happened to be on a day when I had a Dr appt as well so I was so excited at the thought of finally having a comfortable place to sleep. The timing couldn't have been better bc the appt time lined up perfectly where we could have picked up the mattress after my Dr appt BUT the appt time came & went & it ended up being hours b4 the driver showed up (in the usual van) 2 take a full load of patients home.

I was used to having to wait b4 getting a ride home but assumed it'd be diff that day since he'd agreed to transport the mattress. I feel like the way I explained that makes it sound like I'm blaming the driver but the fault is mine 4 not communicating..I shouldn't have expected him 2 remember the date but rather reminded him a day or 2 in advance. Nonetheless I'm still sleeping on the same worn out crummy mattress I've had 1/2 my life (that I bought used 2 begin w)
I couldn't evn say the # of mattresses I've seen on the side of the road but I CAN say every one of em looked better than mine! It's been tempting to try & strap one on the hood of the car somehow but even if I had a way 2 haul it Id be freaking out worrying it might have bugs. (A lady who rode transportation w me had bed bugs & her stories horrified me..I'm cringing just thinking about it) anyway, I got off onto several points with this comment & way off topic but yes you def need to make sure you have a way to transport the mattress if you're able to get one, or some places will bring it to you but the place I was supposed to get mine from charged $75 to deliver furniture and that was only if you lived in that city.
