I've lived in the same house for years. I suffer from allergies and my doctor recommended a humidifier. Two years ago we installed a central humidifier attached to the central AC and heating system. Since then, everything in my home has this spicy smell, like the kind in refrigerators. I first detected it in the clothes in my closet. I thought maybe there was an issue with my washer, but then I noticed it was in everything including my wallets, purses, and document boxes. It's been such a hassle, I hate that smell, but I don't know what it could be. What could it be?

There may be a leak from the humidifier causing the odor. I would have the person who installed it check it.
That sounds like an antifreeze or coolant smell.
I would call a reputable (maybe not the one who installed it) air conditioner person to check the device over.
If the machine gets a clean bill of health, do you have an integral garage? Does your car have a leak in the coolant system? Did you have jug of antifreeze in the garage with a slow leak?
The last thing to check is have you had your house checked for radon? I know they (the proverbial they who say things) that radon is colorless and odorless, but when I bought my house it had a funky smell and they found that the radon was off the charts. When they put the radon remover thingy in, the funk went away.
You could be like me and be overly sensitive to smells. People who have allergies are often quite sensitive. Just check all bases on this one.
