Fixing Too Big Pants

Steps:

1. Open the facing at one end of the pants.

 
2. Open the facing at the opposite end of the pants.

 
3. Pin a safety pin at one end of a piece of elastic about 36-inches long.

 
4. Insert the elastic through one end of the pants and have it come out the other end.

 

 
5. Pin and sew the end of the elastic to the facing.

6. Try on the pants and adjust the elastic so that they fit comfortably. Cut off the excess elastic.
7. Sew the edge of the elastic to the facing.

 
8. Sew up the edge of the facing you ripped out in the beginning.

 
9. Enjoy your pants that now fit well!

I only wear elastic waist pants. But being slightly under 5 feet, my pants were always too long. Great for those growing children too.

I simply make a small slit in the hem and insert elastic. You can either sew or tie the elastic closed. Sew the slit back up and you are good to go. I can hem a pair of pants in less than 5 minutes by myself.

While it's not appropriate for more formal wear such as offices, it's good for pants around the house, keeps the cold out in the winter. This hem can last through several growth spurts of children.
