Fly Repellant for Porch Area?

I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to stop common houseflies from hanging around on our back porch. They seem to accumulate there every day. The porch is very clean, no food or animal waste is present to attract them. And please don't suggest one of those unsightly sticky fly ribbons. Thanks

Hang dried tansy in attractive bunches the way flowers and herbs are hung to dry. Or you can plant tansy and hang the plants in baskets along your porch. This repels flies.

Fill small Ziplock Bags with water and hang them above the entrance to the porch, and perhaps also above the door to the house. I don't really know why this works, but it does. I think I read somewhere it has to do with how the eye of the fly reacts to the reflection from the water...but not sure. Just try it!

I tried this..I even tried the one that suggests you add the pennies .RESULT: (keep in mind, this is my personal result only-yours may be different)
In a nutshell, they laughed at me. The flies, they pretty much laughed at me. They didnt care at all about the bags. In fact I think they invited friends to come laugh at me too. I think I heard some of them laughing and saying "she thinks if she read about it on the internet, then it must be true". (Okay, maybe that was a bit excessive. Thank goodness for me I did not actually hear flies talking or laughing). It seems though that if they could, they certainly did. Did not work for me BUT I hope it does work for you.

you need to put it in direct sunlight, i swear it works and this is super helpful because it is not scent oriented do it doesn't matter how much wind there is. you need really strong, direct sunlight for this though, or it will not work. Also it doesn't affect gnats.

This is the one I was looking for. Couldn't remember if anything added to water. A penny in there is supposed to be amazing.

We did the bag trick and it works in a sunny spot under our very clean Patio area where we eat dinner outdoors. Lets say it works like 90% of the time some. Some fies may NOT see them maybe we need to get them glasses. But in the shady area it doesn't work there they hang around I think because its cooler.

Like mosquitos they enjoy temperature changes. I guess they know we try to relax in shaded areas but on ground level NOT. Only they hang over the stairs area to the basement suite.

Well, I can't believe it, but I finally surrendered to the baggie and it is seeming to work. I tried everything, to no avail. Hung 4 baggies half full w/a penny (don't know why) on my small porch (6 x 8). I got the ziploc baggy, punched a hole near the top and used dental floss to hang about 3' from ceiling. I had 3 across the front but that didn't seem to do anything, so I hung one on the side (perpendicular) and that seems to have done it. Its shady out there now (faces east) and I see no flies.

Can't wait to see if they are still gone tomorrow. But I do believe I have found the source. Our houses are very close together and my neighbor has a compost bin (enclosed in plastic container) about 20' from my porch. I can see lots of flies circling around. I have asked that it be moved far away. I have never had flies before and that bin was not in use a few months ago when I had no flies. Its end of June here in the Pacific NW. I hope I can take the baggies down soon.

Try rubbing window screens and other outdoor surfaces with a fabric softner sheet. I've heard that the generic brand from Walmart works the best.

Oh no...not the dreaded dryer sheets. Ask any question, and somebody will recommend a dryer sheet.

My cousins have been using the water bags for years. I asked them how it works, and they said that the flies think it's a hornets nest. I asked them which fly told them that. Who knew?

okay if it's one people in this world who know all about flies it's us aussies! I have just tried your trick and I can not believe that within 5 minutes of going out and hanging all the little bags and spraying a bit of fly spray around onto the flies that were hanging around the dogs bowl, I now have ZERO FLIES!

I go to the Outback for my holidays and the flies there are resistant to any chemicals-can't wait to try this trick, have to figure out how to make a hat with water bags instead of corks! Only other miracle remedy I have come across for personal body application is a hand creme to which both pure Lavender oil and Sandalwood Oil have been added (I think that's right). Outback the flies crawl in your eyes, up your nose and there's billions-my mate applies this hand creme and stands next to us fly-free whilst we all have the flies all over us.

I literally stopped reading this and immediately tried the bag of water with pennies inside. I had a whole lot of flies that like to hang out by my carport. It working great in the area where there is direct sunlight but unfortunately there a couple that have migrated to the area where there is shade which is buy my door.

So yes the bag works in the Sunlight...

Hang a brown paper bag stuffed with newspaper. It looks like a hornets nest. Another thing that works is filling a spray bottle with half PineSol and half water and spraying the area. They don't like the PineSol.

I have had Luck with Avon's Skin so Soft, I pour a bit on a paper towel and rub it on the screen door. It worked on the hubby and kids so I thought it would work on the door and it did! Hope it works for you too

Had to second the suggestion from the writer in Arkansas. Just this past weekend I did the baggies all around our back porch and in the garage and by the time I was done hanging them, there were no flies.

I USED THE WATER IN THE BAGS AND HUNG THEM FROM MY PORCH, THERE IS NO FLYS, BUT WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN AND NO SUN ON THE BAGS, THE FLYS INTEND TO COME BACK, I ALSO USE DAWN DISH WASHING SOAP IN A SPRAY BOTTLE AND THAT ALSO WORKS AS A FLY REPELLANT, WHEN THE DAWN GETS ON THE FLYS WINGS THEY GET HEAVY AND CAN'T FLY ,, THEN THEY DIE,

I will definitely try that, but does anyone have any suggestions for flies in the trash cans? We bleach/scrub them every week after the trash pick up and bag all our trash, but they keep coming back. Let's just say it starts with 3 and within 2 days there are about 25 inside a closed lid trash. Yuck!!

try sprinkling some de in the trash cans, diatomaceous earth, i see very few people mention this, it won't kill or repel flies or flying insects, but it will kill them where they accumulate. it is harmless to humans and all animals, you can buy the food grade and eat it if you like, some people brush their teeth with it and scrub their face etc, this is the only product i found that actually wiped out a bed bug invasion we had several years ago at our house. i put it in all my trash, litter boxes around the baseboards in the pantry and cupboards, under the sink. maybe the exterminators don't want us to know how great it is.

you can also fill clear one litre soda bottles and set them in the kitchen window and other areas of concern. they won't look as bad as the zip locks hanging around. i think they work better as well.

Well we have a million flies it seems on the outside of our screened porch, and nothing works. I don't know what to do, so we are trying the bags and will let everyone know if it works.

I live in Arkansas the River Valley area and have 4 dogs so the flies are horrible on my porch. I have trried the zip lock bag and because it's shady it does'nt work. Therre has to be sun. Also it has to be a clear bav with no white area to write on. I used this when I lived in OKC area next to my front door and it kept the flies away so I know this works. You can also add a new penny to add more reflection. The reason this works is the glare from the water blinds the flies eyes so it will not know ur porch is there.
