I am working with a Freedom School program this summer, and once a week I'll be doing crafts with the K-2nd grade group. This normally wouldn't be a big issue for me, but they need something that'll last 90 min. I know, it's crazy. I want to have one big craft and one smaller craft each week.
I think I've got all weeks covered, except one. The themes each week are, "I can make a difference... (wk 1) in Myself (wk 2) in My Family (wk 3) in My Community (wk 4) in My County (wk 5) in The World (wk 6) with Hope, Education, & Action.
I'm just having a hard time thinking of something for week 4 (country). I am not looking for patriotic crafts. It's not about celebrating patriotism, it's about making a difference. Most crafts that I'm doing are more of a reminder to the kids about that week's theme, for instance, they'll be making a banner with their family's name on it and symbols that represent their families for week 2. For week 5, they'll be making tie dye shirts that look like the earth. The only one they won't keep, so to speak, will be week 3, where they'll be making Kindness Rocks to leave around our neighborhood (most kids in the program are in our neighborhood, some others are from elsewhere, but they can take them wherever they want). Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone had ideas on crafts about our country that aren't patriotic. Google and pinterest aren't being very helpful in the matter because just about "everything" comes up stars & stripes LoL
Thanks!

You could do geography crafts. Mount Rushmore out of clay or paper mache, a skyscraper out of LEGOs and things of that nature.
You could do a collage craft with the theme "my country." The pictures used in the collage could focus on native flowers, distinctive places such as beaches, mountains, etc. or anything else related to life in this country.
When I was very young, we did a summer arts/crafts/educational themed program and the project was each child hand quilted a state and the teacher quilted it together. There were more than 50 kids so some states the kids doubled up.
We signed our block and the teacher embroidered over our names! It was lovely and would truly fit the theme of my country!!
The quilt hung in that school for years until they tore the building down. I never did find out who took it after that. That was a long, long, long time ago, but the project really stuck in my mind and in my heart!!
Blessings!!! Enjoy your program!
