I grew up with fried green tomatoes. My mother would soak each piece in a dish with buttermilk. Her mix would be some flour, corn meal, salt and pepper. She would dip each one and coat then put in hot skillet. Then she would put about a good pinch of brown sugar on top of both sides. This sometimes would take the bitterness out and we all like it this way.
