We are on a budget. Does anyone have suggestions on where to eat, sleep, and enjoy entertainment on the cheap in NYC? We want to see Ground Zero and as many sites of the city as possible. Does anybody know how to enjoy the city on the cheap?

this day in age it is pretty easy in terms of accomodations there's always airbnb.com where you can find pretty cheap and nice accomodations in people's homes
as well you can, if you're adventurous, find people willing to just let you stay in their house for free by joining couchsurfing.com. NY would have a great options for both those sites
transportation is a blessing in NYC because the subway's hard to beat. Eating can be pricey but if you can manage to stay in someone's home via airbnb or couchsurfing you will have access to a kitchen so you can just plan on cooking your own meals.
NY is great in that once a week many museums have a free open to the public day, such as the Met or MoMA. Of course you ahve to wait in line forever but it's well worth it.
Contact colleges in NY. They may have special deals to stay in their dorm rooms if you are going when school is not in session. If you could buy an entertainment book, you get lots of coupons. Try to get that before you go.
