We are having an issue with fleas. Both dogs were given Advantage a week ago. We spread diatomaceous earth around the house left it for 24 hours and vacuumed it up. One of the dogs used to sleep with my 10 year old until the fleas started.
Unfortunately he seems to swell up no matter what insect bites him. I have washed all his bedding in hot water spread the diatomaceous earth all over his mattress and bed frame and vacuumed every nook and cranny in his room, yet he's still getting bitten? Any suggestions of what I can do? I know the Advantage will work, but it takes time and I don't want him getting bitten all the time so in the meantime anything?

Fleas are a huge problem. I found that Advantage didn't work as well as Frontline on my cats. When I switched them over, it killed the fleas quickly and the cats have never had any fleas since. You are going to have to do a very thorough vacuuming job of the WHOLE house, including any upholstered furniture and mattresses and box springs. Then take the vacuum outside to remove the bag or dirt cup and toss bag out - don't empty inside the house or you will probably have escapees.
I would set out some homemade flea traps to trap the fleas and get rid of them. You can make these out of old coke bottles. Just cut the top off, add water and some Dawn dish soap to the bottle. Set these out around your home. The fleas are attracted to this and will jump inside and die. You should look at these each day and change them out if you see a lot of fleas inside the flea traps you have made.
If you are like me I hate to use products that are harmful to your health or even smell bad. They do have a natural herbal flea spray that is excellent to use and you can buy this and spray around your home using this spray. A lot of people spread baking soda or even salt around the walls of there home to get rid of fleas. You will need to vacuum daily if you do this and reapply this each day to kill the flea eggs in your home.
The lemon spray is yet another great way to get rid of fleas. You can make your own buy boiling up some lemons in a large pot, put the lid on and allow them to seep for 8 to 10 hours. Now strain this and pour the liquid in a spray bottle and spray this around your home. I even spray this on the dog and it makes them smell so good. The fleas hate the smell of lemon and stay away from it.
Other people suggest using Rosemary but I have never tried this one. They say to spread Rosemary around the carpets and the area that you have a lot of fleas.
I believe your DE will work but it is slow acting and you need a fast acting solution.
I do not need it but my family all use a generic Capstar because it acts immediately but only kills adult fleas. This means you would need to use it every day or every other day for 7-10 days as this is your flea development cycle.
They have been using this method for years and they have all size dogs and several cats and they tell me they have had no problems.
One son uses a monthly product also because he occasionally takes his dog in the woods.
You can purchase the original Capstar from Amazon , pet stores and your vet (sometimes) but we have found the generic works just as good and is about 1/3 or less than Capstar.
However, if you want it today - you'll have to pay the price and get Capstar as we have only found the generic online.
I have posted some links below that you may wish to read before you decide if you would like to try it. The main ingredient is Nitenpyram and it is not long lasting but kills adult fleas in less than 24 hours but can be used again the following day.
Always follow directions when using any new product.
The following link describes Capstar:
www.drugs.com/
This is a site that sell Nitenpyram in bulk, capsules or tablets.
I have never used this site but my family has and had no problems.
Amazon usually only sells the high cost Capstar - same as most large stores. Generic is sometimes difficult to find.
